Water Activities

EMERALD COAST BEACHES
Walk along our 24 miles of gleaming, powder-soft beaches and you’ll quickly forget the cares of your everyday world. Our soft, white sand is sculpted from Appalachian quartz so pure that walking through our Gulf water is like having an aquarium at your feet.

You’ll delight in our spectacular beaches (voted “safest in the country” and among the top ten in the country) and the expansive waters of Choctawahatchee Bay. Discover miles and miles of pure playground for shell seeking, sun bronzing, sand castle building, soul searching, and surrendering to sun-drenched solitude.

Four renovated beachfront parks – Beasley Park, James Lee Park, Marler Memorial Park and Wayside Park – and six beach mini-parks featuring ADA accessibility, showers and bathrooms are here for all to enjoy.

And, with more than 60 percent of our lovely beaches protected by law, you can be assured that when you return it will still be the same – natural and undeveloped forever.

DANCING DOLPHINS
The shallows of the Santa Rosa Sound and Destin Harbor are a breeding ground for beautiful dolphins and their graceful dancing is a wonderful sight for adult and kids to behold.

SCUBA DIVING
Exceptional exploring close inshore as the 100 Fathom curve draws closer to Destin * Fort Walton Beach * Okaloosa Island than to any other spot on the Gulf.

Underwater shelling is world-renowned. Brilliant green finger and four-foot (120cm) basket sponges flourish. Also prevalent are aqua and purple sea whips, and reef clusters of white star and ivory tree coral.

Deep water close inshore attracts one of the widest arrays of marine species in Florida, from vibrant yellow angelfish and playful dolphins to six-foot (180cm) manta rays and 350-pound (158kg) loggerhead sea turtles. Lucky divers are often "submerged" amidst schools of migrating mackerel, amberjack and cigar minnows.

Timber Hole, a submerged petrified forest brimming with lobsters, sponges and sea squirts, offers unique explorations, as do sunken luxury liners, ships, barges, railroad box cars -- even airplanes.
